about

Recorded in one day in the band’s regular rehearsal space in Homerton, The Face Tattoo Was A Mistake is an unvarnished look at a band who are ready to set the alternative music world alight (and by storm).

Paradoxical Undressing, one of the first songs they wrote together, is loud and furious and formed of quite dissimilar parts - a Dr. Feelgood-esque verse meeting a psych-jam outro. Daniel says about the song: “I was thinking about spreading a message about The Karpman Drama Triangle through a catchy rock riff.”

Whereas, Wild, Wild Solitude is a boppier groove - inspired by early Talking Heads, with not-so-subtly voyeuristic lyrics. Olly has this to say: “I was on my own in a house just after the first lockdown was lifted. Dan came to visit me and we came up with it in the front room. The lyrics he’d written were strangely relevant to the living situation I was in…”.

Olly: “Green Man Flashing came after getting a pang of guilt from not having done anything productive for a while. I decided to go for a walk and not come home until all of the lyrics for a song were written. I saw some footprints in paint on the pavement, and took that to its logical conclusion.”

The Genuine is Ugly is more down-tempo and in the traditional singer-songwriter mode, à la Smog. Daniel: “I was obsessed with this chord for years that I’d aped from a Deerhunter song - and finally managed to use it in a song; the lyrics are different images sourced from Olga Torkazcuk’s strange fragmented book about body parts and travel: Flights”.

Steamrolled is more punky and punchy, inspired by Sleaford Mods/ Minutemen, about the energy sapping rigours of teaching in a secondary school.

Messiah Or Nothing is a homage to the more narrative driven songs of The Velvet Underground, pastiching Daniel’s childhood as a Jewish boy believing a little too fervently in his own self-importance.

Olly: “The esteemed resource ‘Urban Dictionary’ says referring to someone as a ‘Poor Cow’ is ‘sympathy for someone you don’t like’. This song is more or less autobiographical so that’s more or less accurate. The phrase stuck in my mind after seeing it on the spine of a DVD in the library of a posh house I once went to a party at.”
